Sit and Sew

Beginner Quilting with Chris

Whether you are new to quilting with some previous sewing experience, a true beginner and want to get started, or just need a refresher course, this is the class for you! The class is a small semi-private group (max 4 students) where you will learn basic quilting techniques (rotary cutting, piecing, borders, binding) with a simple beginner design. A working sewing machine and working knowledge of the machine are the only requirements. Once you've got the basics from this course you can then move on to more complicated patterns and projects. This is an eight week open enrollment course.

Bali Wedding Star by Judy Neimeyer

6 Months - 1 Class per Month.This gorgeous advanced design by Judy Neimeyer is on everyone's bucket list! This double wedding ring with an added star design will surely become a family heirloom. A total of 6 classes, $50 per class. Kits and patterns will be available for special order purchase without taking the class. A contract must be signed indicating a commitment to the monthly payment on the class date every month, even if a no show. A form of payment will be kept on file.

Have a sewing machine and not sure where to start? Bring it to one of these 3 hour classes and get to know your machine. You will learn its basic parts and how to thread the machine, how to adjust tension and why it's so important, and basic cleaning and troubleshooting techniques. You will make a sample stitch cloth out of the various stitches your machine is capable of and what they're used for. You will also get a lesson on the different types of thread available on the market and their uses. You will also go over machine needles too.

One Block Wonder

Transform a single fabric print or panel with marvelous piecing magic! Using a 60 degree ruler, create and sew simple pieced hexagon blocks with no "Y" seams. Turn one fabric print into a kaleidoscope quilt of color!

This class is for the advanced beginner, who has done some straight seam piecing and has knowledge of basic quilting skills and wants to progress to more advanced projects. There will be a discussion of pattern drafting and how to change the size of a quilt pattern block. It covers more detailed piecing, smaller and detailed borders, more color theory, and other piecing designs. **Please note first 2 classes are in the afternoon and the rest of the classes are in the morning! This will be a 4 block variety quilt that Chris is custom designing. We do not have a sample for this yet. It will cover half square triangles, flying geese, and other designs.

Fractured Paint Box by Judy Neimeyer

The Fractured Paint Box was designed as a beginner pattern for paper piecing! However, this should NOT be your introduction to paper piecing - You must have taken Star Baby or already finished a paper piecing pattern in order to take this class. The project is fast, uses only one foundation block, employs simple cutting techniques, and is an affordable and fun way to make a paper piecing project! It is meant to make those new to the process find confidence, understanding, and success! Cheryl will help you with a custom order for a kit by using Quiltster to plan your own colorway if you purchase the fabric from Homestead Quilting.
