The Mariner's Compass (or compass rose) block is a classic design element in many traditional and contemporary quilts. It is inspired by the beauty of centuries old compass patterns found on maps used by early seafaring explorers. We will create a stunning 60" square wallhanging, sewing four 18" compasses, using the paper-piecing technique that enables us to create those wonderful sharp points that characterize the design. The basic paper piecing technique has many applications in quilting.
